The Experience
Introduction
Wodan Timbur Coaster is a 2012 wooden coaster from Great Coasters International (GCI) at Europa Park. This is a star attraction and one of the few coasters at Europa Park, not made by Mack themselves (who owns and operates the park). Wodan is one of the biggest wooden coasters and if you ever get the chance to experience it at night, it's an absolute must!
Beautiful and Raw
Wodan sits at the back of the Iceland area, right next to blue fire Megacoaster and despite them being such different coasters with different looks, they actually work very well together. It also doesn't take long after you enter Wodan's queue before you're transported to another world, either walking through highly-themed mystical tunnels or wandering in between and under the massive wooden structure while listening to the trains loudly roaring around the course. It's extremely immersive and further adds to an already extremely impressive ride. Luckily, the ride experience can live up to the hype.
You know the drill
Wodan is a very large GCI wooden twister and for a seasoned coaster enthusiast, this will probably not come as a surprise, but it's a relentless beast that tears through its layout at blistering pace. It might be 'typical GCI' but in the best way possible. It seems that the sole purpose of Wodan is to get through its twisting layout, as fast as (in)humanly possible and the resulting ride experience is one of incredible pace and intense transitions.
Night Demon
Wodan is a ride all about pace, laterals and fast transitions and it absolutely offers this anytime of the day, no matter the circumstances. But night rides on Wodan are well... night and day. Out of our 5 rides on Wodan, only the first was during the day and that was our very first ride. Having ridden Troy the year prior we came in with grand expectations and I think we were both ever so slightly let down by our day-right. Now all of the before-mentioned strengths still applied but it felt around the same, perhaps even 5-10% less thrilling than Troy and we had obviously hoped for it to be even greater than our beloved Troy. However, as we came back, after dark, to get our night-rides on Wodan, it was an entirely different beast offering a much wilder ride than perhaps anything we had been on. The term 'Pace' doesn't really do justice to just how fast it feel like you're going when being on this ride at night and after a raining nightride with fireworks going off in the background, we knew that Wodan could be one of the very best.
Not an airtime ride
Now one dissapointment that people might have with Wodan (other than finding it rough, which we really didn't, especially not considering how intense it is), would be the lack of airtime. Troy is no airtime machine but it does have a lot of quick airtime pops here and there but Wodan has very little in this regard. It will absolutely throw you side to side, back and fourth and even deliver some surprisingly decent positive G's but it will rarely - if at all - lift you out of the seat. This is in pretty start contrast to another GCI like Mystic Timbers but Wodan clearly has its focus elsewhere and that is A-okay, as long as you don't come in, expecting great airtime.
Conclusion
Wodan is an outstanding thrill coaster and might just be the best wooden coaster in Europe. From its blistering pace to its crazy laterals and intense transitions, Wodan delivers a truly fast and exciting ride experience, and that's just during the day. Night rides are something every coaster enthusiasts must experience as the antics gets turned to 11 and Wodan shows you just how crazy a coaster ride can get and you get to find out just how much of a thrill seeker you truly are.
