The Experience
Introduction
Troy is a 2007 wooden coaster made by Great Coasters International (GCI) and is one of two thrill rides at Toverland. It cannot be overstated just how much Troy did for this - at the time - small dutch themepark. Troy single-handedly put Toverland on the map for enthusiasts and thrill-seekers alike and it should be a big draw for anyone to make the trip out to this park.
Our first GCI
As the section-title says, this was our first meeting with GCI and their world-famous product, the modern wooden coaster. Our previous experiences with wooden coasters mostly came from old classics like the two "Rutschebanen" back home in Denmark, as well as Colossos at Heide Park so we had no idea what to actually expect from a GCI coaster. Needless to say, this thing blew us out of the water and we never looked at a wooden coaster the same way again.
A true Twister
Troy is a true twister, with its long, winding track and constant directional changes. In between this, GCI found many opportunities to throw you up out of your seat, resulting in an exhilarating ride experience and one that is very different from the beforementioned wooden coasters that we had tried. It made it clear that there is a very big difference between a traditional out-and-back layout (like an L or T shape) and a twister layout, and the ride experience they each provide.
A wild Beast
Troy is a wild ride. Like, really, really wild. From the first, surprisingly good first drop it starts bulldozing through its twisting layout like there is no tomorrow. You will get thrown around in your seat like a ragdoll, experiencing both strong laterals, negatives and sometimes both at the same time. There really is nothing quite like a super aggressive woody to wake you up and you will feel so alive coming off this thing. Now that saying does have a double meaning because Troy is definitely not the smoothest ride out there. It's not that the ride is downright rough but it's rumbly nature mixed with its breakneck pace and intensity, means that the ride is a lot and you will most likely feel it through either some exhaustion and over time maybe a slight headache, it really all depends on your tolerance but just be warned that this is not a butter-smooth gliding exercise but a crazy, chaotic, and forceful rodeo throw-down.
Conclusion
Troy got a 9 rating for its strong layout with blistering pace and super aggressive ride experience. It showed us another side of wooden coasters that we hadn't experienced before and that we can't get enough of now. It isn't the most dynamic and certainly not the smoothest coaster out there but it's a lightning in a bottle type of ride that is just pure fun to experience.
