The Experience
Introduction
Voltron is a 2024 Mack Rides Stryker coaster at Europa Park. Over the years, Mack has expanded their selection, especially in the thrill market and Europa Park appropriately captures their journey as it houses both the very first Mack Rides thrill coaster in 'bluefire megacoaster' and now also their most ambitious project ever. Voltron is a true flagship attractions, one that many have claimed to be missing from Europa Park but it's also one of the greatest coasters one earth, if you ask us.
Ballad of the Singing Coils
While Voltron might be built as one of the premier thrill coasters of Europe, its theming and overall presentation is also of the highest standard, as with most other attractions at Europa Park. Interestingly, Voltron doesn't tower over other rides, it doesn't dominate the park and it's pretty much impossible to spot from outside the park.As with most of Europa Park's bigger coasters, Voltron is seated along the edge of the park, in the new for 2024 Croatia area. The ride creates a lot of genetic energy as all of its 4.544 ft of track twists and turns off and around buildings and greenery. The ride feels very majestic and grandeur as you see several trains flying around the track and circling the massive Tesla Coil center-piece. But the theming only gets better and better as you traverse through the queue, culminating in a truly amazing indoor area filled with movement, booming audio and special effects. The cherry on top are the 4 very real tesla coils hanging from the ceiling that, at controlled intervals, uses high-voltage electrical arcs to play a tune for the eager riders. Every time this happened, everyone would drop what they were doing and look up at the electrifying show taking place a top the ceiling. Luckily, the spectacles of Voltron doesn't stop there.
When you combine two complete experiences
The queue and boarding experience might feel like a ride itself but when it comes to the actual ride experience, Voltron has so much to offer, we would be here for an hour if we were to actually list out every element and what forces they produce. Instead, we will highlight some of the most notable moments this state-of-the-art rollercoaster has on its menu. The ride starts off with a "bounce track" one, which actually produces airtime while cool lightning effects shoots around you, before launching straight into a beyond-vertical launch is one of the wildest and most unique starts to any coaster in the world. From there, Voltron subjects its riders to loads of hangtime, strong positive G's, many whippy transitions and some truly wild airtime. There are several moments when it violently launches you into the otherwise very comfortable lap bar restraints before immediately throwing you in some other direction.Voltron kind of consists of two halves, each making up a complete and satisfying thrill coaster experience but put together, it becomes one of the most thrilling and complete rides out there.
Sponsored by Rimac Nevera
The full, official title of Voltron is "Voltron Nevera" and in case you don't know what that means, Nevera is an electric supercar model by Croatian car manufacturer "Rimac Automobil" and they even have a real Rimac Nevera standing inside a display off to the side of the Croatian area, that shows off the extremely impressive specifications of the car. Given Mack's reputation of often delivering fairly weak launches to their thrill coasters, it's almost like the Rimac Nevera has powered Voltron's launches as these are without a doubt the most powerful launches we've experienced on a Mack coaster (from what we have heard, it's comparable to the launches on Stardust Racers). The first launch and the boost launch has good yank while the first launch also goes beyond vertical which creates its own unique sensation. However, in terms of raw power, it's the swing launch which fires off the second half that really surprised us. The initial backwards launch quickly pushes you forward in your seat as you shoot up the short Jr. Scorpion Tail, and the following forwards launch, slams you back into your seat as you rapidly accelerate again. These are very different-feeling launches and much more powerful launches than what you might have experienced from other Mack launch coasters before. They are yet another reason why Voltron might be Mack Rides crowning jewel.
Is it rough?
Mack truly has become one of the leading coaster manufacturers over the last decade-and-a-half and has even overtaken the thrill coaster market with their impressive new models but this still hasn't stopped them from sometimes receiving criticism regarding some aspects of their coasters. The most mentioned complaint about Voltron is its supposed roughness and heavy vibrations on the wing seats that some people have claimed to have heavily damaged their ride experience. We obviously can't speak for others or their experiences but speaking from our own, we thought Voltron was a perfectly smooth coaster. Now it's true, it's not a glass-smooth coaster where you seamlessly glide over the track but for a ride with this level of intensity, we really didn't find anything to complain about at all and as with most other Mack coasters, we found the seats to be extremely comfortable and the restraints to be very freeing. We rode it 6 times and could've easily done 6 more given the chance. We will say that it's true the ride can be a lot and we're therefore not surprised that people may be effected negatively or maybe even develop a headache if they are more sensitive to the forces experienced on Voltron. Our best advice is: now yourself and your limits.
Conclusion
Voltron is an absolute beast of a rollercoaster and sits comfortably as one of our favorite attractions anywhere in the world. It takes a lot to be crowned the highlight of a world-class destination like Europa-Park but we truly feel like Voltron deserves it as well as its Golden Rating on our site. If you didn't already have enough reasons to visit Europa Park, Voltron certainly should be the massive boulder that broke the camels back (or something along those lines).
