The Experience
Introduction
Matterhorn Blitz is a 1999 Mack Rides Wilde Maus coaster at Europa Park. Given Mack Rides history and the fact that they own Europa Park, you would think that Matterhorn Blitz might have some historic tittle such as the first ever Mack wild mouse or Europa Park's first ever coaster but none of these are true. Instead, Matterhorn Blitz can brag about something much more important, being a custom variation that is more unique and much better than the usual wild mouse clones.
Wild Mice and a Chicken Lift
The first major advantage that Matterhorn Blitz has over many other 'Wild Mice' is its theming, not that this is a surprise given Europa Park and their standards for theming but the wacky family and all their farm animals does really elevate the experience. You know what also elevates the experience? An actual elevator. Matterhorn Blitz has a fully enclosed station and the first element after you leave it, is an elevator lift filled with chickens and hens. This really caught us by surprise and makes this one coaster to remember.
Great Views and Tight Turns
After you exit the elevator lift, it's back to familiar territories as the layout is otherwise identical to the large-park variation of the WIlde Maus. Fortunately, this is the superior version compared to the standard Wild Maus, and has better views and a larger, signature drop. On Matterhorn Blitz, you get great views of both the Eurosat Dome on one side, and Poseidon on the other. The coaster is also surrounded by trees and wooden buildings and as we've already stated, the theming is far above the usual. The tight lateral-filled turns are also always welcome but outside of those and the drop, the layout really doesn't have much to it, which is to be expected from this ride model.
Conclusion
While Matterhorn Blitz is not a standout family coaster and doesn't hold a candle to most of the bigger rides at Europa Park, this is a far superior version of the heavily cloned wildmouse model with all the advantages of the large park variant, as well as elevated theming and a unique elevator lift and overall we were very impressed with Matterhorn Blitz.
