The Experience
Introduction
Thor's Hammer is a 2002 Gerstlauer Bobsled coaster at Djurs Sommerland. While it might be hard to imagine now, there once was a time when Djurs only had two coasters, a Wacky worm and the mighty Thor's Hammer. Today, this sits as a humble supporting family coaster in the backend of the park and while the park takes mighty good care of it, we can't feel like it's starting to feel a little bit forgotten, though it really is a decent ride.
Dynamic Wild Mouse
Thor's hammer is - as every bobsled by Gerstlauer is - a descendant of the classic wildmouse coaster. It has the classic 4-seat single cars, the iconic hairpin turns and consists mostly of that and quick dips and turns. However, what really sets the bobsled model apart from the classic wildmouse ones, is how dynamic it is. While the wild mice could fit on a square grid, the bobsleds are often winding and twisting. Therefore, it's a pretty big upgrade over your average wildmouse as it delivers a much more dynamic and fun layout.

Djurs has always been a pretty park, mixing nice scenery with good theming and Thor's Hammer is no different though it's quite obvious that this is one of the parks oldest attractions. The animatronics, while portraying some funny scenes, look very rough and the entire area has a very 'old' feeling to it. Now this is not necessarily a bad thing and we personally think it's quite nostalgic but it doesn't quite have the scale or excitement that the newer areas and coasters have. Thor hanging from the ceiling is always a blast though.
If it was made today
Thor's Hammer offers a very fun and re-rideable ride experience. The bunny hop through the wooden structure and the following section above the water, is very nice and the hairpin turns are always a laugh but we can't help but to wonder, given Djurs success as Denmarks premier 'non Tivoli park', how Thor's Hammer would have been if it was made today. The ride - while smooth - feels quite old and is also fairly short. We think these elements, as well as the somewhat awkward location in the park, makes it feel a bit forgotten in the grand scheme of things. Perhaps this is an area where Djurs will feel they can do better and replace Thor's Hammer with something bigger and better, though we definitely would miss it.
Conclusion
Thor's Hammer might not be the biggest and greatest family coaster but it's an Absolut classic in the danish themepark industry. It's a fun, smooth and re-rideable coaster that the whole family can enjoy. It doesn't get nearly the attention that it used to and we're unsure whether it will still be here in 10-15 years but as long as it is, we will continue to give it a go, whenever we're at Djurs.
