The Experience
Introduction
Juvelen is a 2013 Intamin Family Launch Coaster at Djurs Sommerland. It was the second "large coaster" and helped the park establish its large, family-focused coaster line-up that they are known for today. Juvelen is also a revered family coaster is quite often considered one of the better family coasters in Europe.
Theming & Speed
Two of Juvelen's greatest strength is its great theming and the way theming amplifies the sensation of speed. The coaster is built in and around a large mayan temple which looks great. The ride has a small pre-launch section with large statues and atmospheric audio. The coaster has an identical top speed to the parks two other largest coasters but this is definitely the ride which focuses the most on speed and also feels the fastest. This may in part be due to the quadbike-looking trains and their straddled seating position but mostly, it's because of the different theming elements placed around the ride's twisting track, which really elevates the feeling of flying around obstacles on your quadbike.
The launch and the Boost
Juvelen is a multi-launch coaster, meaning that it launches the train more than once, however, these are two different types of launches as one is from a standstill whereas the second is a boost. We don't know exactly how fast the first launch is but it feels quite mild as it's quite gradual and doesn't reach anywhere near its top speed. As you go through the first half of the layout at ok speed, you might start to think "ah, this is alright but nothing special" but then you hit the boost launch and despite this also being tire-driven like the first one, this second boost launch feels much more powerful and properly yanks you to its 52.8 mph top speed. The following few turns are also very intense and you really feel every bit of speed at this point.
A tale of lost Airtime
Juvelen is a great family coaster, no doubt about it, but if there is one thing that really could have taken it to the next level, it would have been some variation and different forces. The most disappointing thing is, that this is already a part of the layout in form of two larger hills on the ride. This is a deciation from the rest of the layout that basically hugs the ground and focuses almost exclusively on tight turns and positive G's. Therefore, it would have been such a breadth of fresh air to have two airtime moments to really mix up the ride experience. Unfortunately, the hills does nothing but slow down the train, without a smidge of airtime and they really are true dead spots on this otherwise fast-paced coaster.
Conclusion
Juevelen is a great family launch coaster. It's long, well-themed, well paced and has a strong boost launch. It feels quite complete in its experience though it really could have used some variation in force to bring it up to (and maybe over) a 7 rating (which is an elite score for family coasters). For now, it sits as one of Denmarks better rides and a true quality family coaster.
