The Experience

Introduction

Minifigure Speedway is a 2026 Dueling Reverse Coaster from Zierer at Legoland Billund. This was the grand new addition to the park when we first visited in 2026, and it had big shoes to fill, as it replaced another standout in the park: the Intamin rapids ride, Vikings River Splash. Luckily, Minifigure Speedway is a solid family coaster that will probably remain one of the most popular rides in the park for many years to come.

A Contested Market

The family shuttle coaster market has developed a lot over the years. It started with the classic, self-operated Butterfly model from Sunkid, which was considered more of a niche attraction that smaller parks could install without needing staff to operate it. Then, in 2011, Vekoma - which has always been the king of shuttle coasters - developed its highly popular Family Boomerang model, which has since taken over the family market in the coaster world. Since then, other manufacturers have entered this specific space, such as Gerstlauer and ART Engineering. In 2024, Zierer entered the fray with their Dueling Reverse Coaster variant of the Force model, first debuting at Legoland Windsor before a clone appeared at Legoland Billund in 2026.

Legends vs. Allstars

What makes the Zierer variant stand out, however, is the racing element. While Vekoma has previously built two dueling Family Boomerangs, this is still a mostly unutilized feature - one that we found heavily improves the experience over the standard Vekoma installations we've ridden. While the storyline is undeniably silly, the pre-show where the teams are presented and you are assigned a random racer is clearly something that grabs kids' attention. Adding to this, the employees made sure to engage in fun banter and cheer whenever their team won. Overall, this added level of immersion and energy helped elevate what would otherwise just be "another family coaster" into something worthwhile.

A Coaster of two halves

When it comes to the ride experience, this is very much a coaster of two halves. That might sound like an obvious assessment for a boomerang model, but since this layout features an actual mid-ride lift hill rather than just a traditional reverse spike, this becomes even more true. We found the first half to be just okay, it is decently paced and very smooth, but lacks much in the way of noticeable forces (which, for a family ride, is perfectly fine).
While that second lift hill does interrupt the coaster's pacing, the racing element actually turns this pause into a positive. It gives you a moment to interact with the opposing train and try to figure out if your side is currently in the lead. The return run is also much stronger and surprisingly forceful since you are taking the compact layout backward at the exact same speed as the outward leg, all thanks to that second lift. This results in some solid positive Gs and a strong finale before you hit the brakes to find out whether or not you've won the race (we got beaten twice by the Butterfly Girl team, and no, we are not proud of it).

Conclusion

Minifigure Speedway is a solid family coaster with great family-friendly energy that immerses kids in the racing theme while offering fun moments of interaction between the trains during the ride.
While the first half is fairly mundane and the pacing isn't anything special, the fun theming, the racing element, and the strong second half result in this currently being our favorite Family Boomerang-style coaster, beating out numerous Vekoma variants. This is a fun addition to the park and we hope to see more Dueling Reverse Coasters from Zierer in the future!
